Manufacturing Intelligence

The use of real-time manufacturing performance information is not new for many industries. Large continuous process plants have widely adopted Historian products and Plant Information Management System (PIMS) products to help optimize the performance of their plants, mostly to maximize production and yields. The applications are primarily used locally by engineers, managers, and operators, and the information rarely leaves the confines of the plant environment.

Today, the demand for information on the status of manufacturing and, more specifically, the need to improve global manufacturing performance has given rise to Enterprise Manufacturing Intelligence (EMI) initiatives. The centerpiece of the EMI initiative is that it must deliver global manufacturing visibility across the enterprise. Most manufacturers recognize the opportunity and have made extensive investments in the context of their existing plant, automation, and IT investments. The requirements of successful EMI systems can be defined as follows:

- Access to and visibility of all data generated by systems that impact on manufacturing operations
- Enterprise wide visibility of manufacturing performance
- Synchronization between plant and enterprise systems

There are nuances as to how manufacturers build their EMI systems, but the result should be the same – a way to access manufacturing information anywhere, anytime irrespective of how fragmented or isolated the existing plant systems may be.

The RAPID Manufacturing Intelligence Platform does not supplant EMI systems; it is a critical component of it. Intelligence is a highly sought after currency, the value of which is defined by its source, credibility, granularity and timeliness. With the RAPID Manufacturing Intelligence Platform, manufacturers can access and visualize data from plant floor systems across multiple sites at a detailed or executive level overview, or can be used in conjunction with other manufacturing intelligence applications.
